Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses the knowledge and ability to understand the concepts and possible applications of statistics in the biomedical and clinical field, from anthropometry to biometry, to the planning, organization and management of health services.

Course contents

Introduction to statistics, population and sample, variability.

Types of variables, data collection and management.

Descriptive statistic. Frequency distributions.

Position indexes (mode, median, centiles, mean)

Variation indexes (variance, standard deviation, range, interquartile range)

Graphic representations, two way tables.

The diagnostic test (sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV)

Measures of association (correlation, linear regression)

Probability, probability distributions, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, confidence interval.

Population studies and clinical trials, epidemiologic indicators: incidence, prevalence, risk
