-
from Feb 18, 2025 to Jun 06, 2025
Learning outcomes
The first aim of this course is to present a complete review of the failure mechanisms of materials. A further aim is to introduce the main methods for experimental stress analysis and for non-destructive tests.
Course contents
Non-destructive test methods: Penetrant liquids, Magnetic particles, Eddy Currents, Ultrasound inspection.
Experimental stress analysis by strain gauges. Determination of residual stresses by the Hole Drilling method: experimental procerdure and data processing by theoretical models, exercises and examples.
Low-cycle fatigue: cyclic hardening or softening, the cyclic curve, the hysteresis curve. Manson-Coffin model and rain-flow method.
Specific Lab exercitations on: dye penetrants, magnetic particles, eddy currents and ultrasound inspection. Relevant applications of strain guges and low-cycle fatigue.

Teaching methods
Explanations by notes on a tablet. Practical exercitations and training in the Lab.
Assessment methods
Student assessment is performed by a written test, consisting of threequestions. They may have a theoretical or a practical content, with reference to the main Course topics (including practical applications of the studied experimental techniques).
Teaching tools
Slide projector. A tablet used as "virtual blackboard". Copies will be provided (by publication on virtuale.unibo.it) at the end of the lectures.
Some practical skills on: Strain gauges, Non-Destructive Control Techniques.
