Learning outcomes
Students will enhance their critical thinking, time- and group- management skills, and creativity by analysing existing materials, planning and creating new activities, and presenting their group works.
Course contents
The course will deal with the main theoretical principles and teaching methods regarding the teaching of Italian as a Second Language (L2) within multilingual classes at primary school.
The course will focus on the structure of the teaching unit, the appropriate methodologies for its different phases, the main characteristics of the mixed ability classes, some inclusive teaching strategies for oral and written inputs. Children's literature (such as short stories, picture books, fairy tales) will be used as authentic materials.
Readings/Bibliography
Bibliographical references will be provided throughout the duration of the course.
In each lesson materials and slides prepared by the teacher will be made available for students. Further reading will be suggested during the lessons.
Teaching methods
The course will last 8 hours (two 4 hour lessons), and it will be both theoretical and practical.
Every lesson will be divided into three parts: a short theoretical framework, the analysis of existing teaching materials, and the creation of new activities based on similar inputs by small groups of students. Finally, students will present their group works, and receive a general feedback.
The use of digital devices is highly encouraged. Students will be required to bring their own laptops to class.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation will be based on:
- course participation and cooperation during the lessons,
- a final paper (max. 2 pages) where students will be asked to reflect on the connections between the theoretical principles, the teaching methods, the gorup works, and the current legislation for the Italian primary school (MIUR, 2012).
Grading will be as follows:
+1 (very good)
0 (good)
-1 (sufficient)
rejected. In the case of rejection the course should be repeated.
