Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Blended Learning
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences (cod. 8488)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to use complete computer systems, software and databases to collect, organize, and catalog information; identify a clinical and research problem and conduct a literature review on the topic.

Course contents

The lessons aim to examine the literature search process in the field of nursing and midwifery, particularly regarding the phases and operations useful for finding documents that provide information of disciplinary interest. Particular attention will be paid to:

  • Formulate the research question
  • Background and foreground questions
  • The PICO model and its variants
  • Plan the search strategy
  • Tools that facilitate literature search
  • Databases: MEDLINE-Pubmed, CINHAL, Embase, Cochrane Library, JBI, Scopus, Web of Science, ILISI, PEDro, TRIP database, UpToDate
  • Find the guidelines
  • Unibo library system
  • Reference management systems (Zotero)
  • Consult the sources
  • Select and find relevant studies

Teaching methods

The course is divided into lectures and practical exercises in the classroom, individually and in small groups, aimed to interrogate the main databases for nursing and midwifery. Students will be encouraged to actively participate and plan the most effective literature search strategy.

Assessment methods

At the end of the course, students are asked to write, in small groups, a written report that should be sent via e-mail to the teacher at least 15 days before the exam date. The report consists of a literature search on one of the research questions provided by the teacher according to a specific format indicated by the teacher.

The objective of the test is to evaluate the ability to formulate a PICO, query the main databases in the field of nursing and midwifery, select sources, and find scientific information of disciplinary interest. In particular, the technical-practical skills for accessing literature sources and reviewing the literature will be assessed.

The grade will be defined as follows:

  • 30 cum laude, excellent conduction of the literature search, complete with all the required parts, in compliance with the delivery times.
  • from 24 to 30, complete conduction of the literature search, in compliance with the delivery times.
  • from 18 to 23, sufficient conduction of the literature search.

The integrated exam is considered passed if the student achieves a final grade equal to or higher than 18 also in the remaining modules.

The test will be carried out according to the indications contained in the University regulations (which you are invited to consult) and according to any other indications provided from time to time by the academic bodies.

For requests for clarification, contact the teacher via e-mail.

Teaching tools

The lessons will be carried out through the use of the main technological tools (PowerPoint) together with the connection to databases via Proxi Unibo
