Learning outcomes
Students will learn the theoretical principles of hospital epidemiology and hygiene and will be able to assess health problems in a community and how health and social care services meet the major needs of the population.
Course contents
Basic general prevention
Health determinants. Objectives and methods of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Health education.
Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases
Microorganisms. Host-parasite relationships. Infection sources, routes of entry and elimination of infective agents, direct and indirect transmission, factors favouring infections.
General prophylaxis. Active and passive immunoprophylaxis; constitution and requisites of vaccine, precautions and contraindications, schedule for vaccines in newborns, vaccines for health operators. Chemoprophylaxis. Objectives and methods for antisepsis, disinfection and sterilization. Some applications of disinfectants and antiseptics.
Epidemiology and prophylaxis of the most important infections transmitted mainly by air; infections with oral-fecal transmission; infections transmitted through blood contact.
Hospital infections. Standard control measures. Isolation as an infection control measure in hospitals. Biological risk for health operators.
