Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student has a basic preparation on the techniques to support the pediatric dentist in the management of the patient in developmental age. The course has as its fundamental objectives the acquisition of both theoretical knowledge and practical skills and clinical criteria for the prevention and therapy of odontostomatological pathologies in developmental age. In particular, the student is able to: communicate effectively with the child and his family; know the development and growth of the cephalic region; recognize the most frequent odontostomatological pathologies in developmental age (caries, dental anomalies, malocclusions, periodontal diseases, mucosal pathologies, dental lesions of traumatic origin); know the correlations between systemic pathologies and oral pathologies, know the psychology of developmental age and practice an adequate behavioral approach to the therapies of odontostomatological pathologies, know the prevention of odonto-stomatological pathologies and use motivation, information and education techniques, interpreting the clinical signs and instrumental tests for effective orthopedic-orthodontic prevention, carrying out a correct therapeutic plan for carious pathologies, pulpopathies and periapical pathologies of deciduous and permanent teeth, implementing pain and anxiety control in the dental field in developmental age, having acquired specific knowledge in the field of local anesthesia, conscious sedation and narcosis; carry out correct pharmacological therapy of odontostomatological pathologies in developmental age, having acquired specific knowledge on drugs that can be prescribed in developmental age; manage and prevent dento-alveolar lesions of traumatic origin; carry out a correct therapeutic plan for surgical pathologies, having acquired knowledge of special surgery in developmental age;
Course contents
· The management of the patient in developmental age and his family in a dental environment.
· The development and growth of the cephalic region. Deciduous and permanent dentition. Deciduous, mixed and permanent dentition. Dental anomalies of number, shape, structure and position.
· The first dental visit in developmental age.
· The pedodontic medical record.
· The promotion of oral health in developmental age (healthy diet, home oral hygiene, use of topical and systemic fluoride, periodic visits, sealants).
· Dental pain in children
· Pain control in the dental environment in developmental age. Local anesthesia in developmental age. Conscious sedation in developmental age.
· The carious pathology of deciduous elements, with particular reference to ECC.
· Pulp and periradicular pathologies of endodontic origin of the deciduous elements: etiology, diagnosis, therapies
· Dental lesions of traumatic origin of the deciduous and permanent elements.
