Learning outcomes

The student - knows the tools (grammars and dictionaries of different types, and corpora of parallel and/or comparable texts) and methods (micro and macro-restructuring, editing and revision of the target text) of fundamental translation - is able to apply them in the translation of a variety of texts, even complex ones, from Italian into Spanish - second language - is able to identify and apply the most appropriate fundamental translation strategies to the communicative/operational functions of the texts to be translated.

Course contents

During the course will be carried out analysis, documentation, translation and revision of texts related to various textual genres (reviews, news and opinion articles, literary texts, etc.) and thematic areas (current affairs, tourism, fiction, human sciences, cinema, etc.). In addition, we will examine in depth some of the themes related to the translation field (translation theory), both methodologically and in terms of content and terminology.
We will deal with both presential and non-presential working methods, under the supervision of the teacher.
The source texts used in translation and revision activities, as well as the rest of the in-depth material, will be provided through the e.learning platform.

Teaching methods

The lessons will have an eminently practical and laboratory approach.
Basically, for each new text to be translated, the three main phases of analysis, translation and revision will be dealt with (in class or individually at the teacher's expense for the established periodic deliveries).
In order to comply with these teaching methods, it is essential that students prepare the translations according to the teacher's instructions and have a copy (digital or hardcopy) to use in class. Furthermore, it is essential to actively contribute to the dialogue with the teacher and the rest of the class in the various phases of the course with a collaborative and constructive attitude.

Assessment methods

THE EXAMINATION MODALITIES DO NOT CHANGE DUE TO THE CONTINGENCY OF ONLINE TEACHING: THE EXAMINATION WILL BE DELIVERED ON A TEAM PLATFORM WITH TIMED DELIVERY ON IOL.

The final exam of the entire teaching is aimed at verifying the learning of the main translation methods. It consists of two translation tests (from Spanish to Italian and from Italian to Spanish). The overall grade of the entire teaching will therefore be calculated on the average of the grades of the two exams.

With regard to the translation module from Italian into Spanish, the examination test aims to verify the acquisition of both an autonomous analytical and translating method, as well as the resolution strategies to be applied depending on the nature of the translation problems and the indications of the translation assignment, as well as the ability to express oneself in the target language.

Concretely, the examination of the module will focus on a translation of a short passage (no more than 350 words) that can be traced back to types of text and/or content seen in the lesson, accompanied by commentary notes. These will include: the main problems encountered in the original text, the prevailing communicative function, the translation techniques adopted and any alternative rendering.

During the examination, which lasts about 3 hours, the use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and material produced during the course will be allowed, as well as the use of online resources usually consulted during the course.

The evaluation of the exam is in thirtieths and takes place by subtracting points (from a minimum of 0.25 to a maximum of 2, depending on their severity) for each error made in the translation being examined, as already seen in the correction of the translations delivered during the course.

In addition, the evaluation of the translation assignments (individual or group) will be added to the score of the Spanish translation module examination for a maximum of 4 points.
