Learning outcomes
The course wants to provide knowledge on social media, by analizing tools, methods and approaches. At the end of the course the student will understand: how to use interactive Web 2.0 internet-based application; how to study and exploit user-generated content; how to create service-specific profiles for the website or app; how to manage social networks in different field and for different tasks. The students will be also introduced to social media jobs and profiles.
Course contents
This year, the course will touch the cognitive and knowledge-based aspects of social media.
Topics include: (1) the representation of self and mediated identities; (2) media affordances, and how they affect online and offline behaviour; (3) validity, truth, and provenance of knowledge as emerging in social media; (4) the semantics of self, opinion, emotion, stories, and values; (5) possible practical experiences and methods as reported by invited professionals.

Course materials will be distributed on IOL before the starting of the course.
Teaching methods
The course format includes: (1) lectures; (2) sessions dedicated to delving into social media analysis with both semiotic and computational methods; (3) possible lectures by professionals in social media; (4) experiments in simulating or activating social media phenomena.
Assessment methods
The final exam will consist of the evaluation and discussion of the experimental projects chosen by the students.
The final grades will be published on the teacher's webpage, normally within two weeks after the exam.
Students are required to contact the teacher to register the proposed note onto their transcript.
Teaching tools
Besides the teaching facilities installed in the lab, software tools for social knowledge engineering will be used on the existing machines by the students, either alone, in pairs, or in groups.
Social media will be also used for informal interaction among students, with the teacher, and the external world in simulations.
