Learning outcomes

Analysis of the main classical sociological theories, relevant for a sociological view of the law.

Confrontation with the less well-known and different genesis the of "science of civilizations" which took place in the fourteenth century Islam.

This will have the purpose of stimulating, on the students themselves' part, personal reflections and critical contextualization.

Course contents

The course will consist of two parts. The main part of the course will be devoted to the most important theories which composed a sociological view of the law, to the main problems they investigated and to the topic of the empirical research.

The final part of the course will be devoted to a confrontation with the genesis of the "science of civilization" in the fourteenth century Islam.

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching. The teacher will also use powerpoint slides and films.

Assessment methods

The student will be asked to discuss some of the relevant topics of the course, in order to assess not only the knowledge of the discipline, but also the methodology and capacity for criticism developed by the student.

Students regularly attending the classes will have the possibility to choose to perform the exam according to alternative modalities which will be detailed during the course.
