Second cycle degree programme (LM) in
Italian Studies, European Literary Cultures, Linguistics (cod. 0973)
Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Semiotics (cod. 8886)
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this class the student has an in-depth knowledge of the core principles of the synchronic analysis of the language faculty and of natural languages, with particular emphasis on the morphological and syntactic levels of analysis. S/he can critically appreciate the main notions of traditional grammar, starting with the notion of word and with the distinctions among word classes (nouns, adjectives, verbs); s/he can contextualize these notions in the framework of cross-linguistic variability. S/he masters the basic elements of linguistic typology.
Course contents
Students of LM 'Italianistica, Culture letterarie europee e Scienze linguistiche' are invited to choose the 12-CFU-course; the 6-CFU- course is dedicated to students of Semiotica and Lingua e cultura italiane per stranieri
The course 'Lingue e linguaggio' is an advanced class in General Linguistics. It continues and further develops the scientific exploration of the language faculty to which the students have been introduced in a first linguistics class (Introduction to linguistics, Language 101, etc.). The participants will need the prerequisite notions and methods learned there and are advised to catch up by reading an introductory manual before starting the class 'Lingue e linguaggio' if they did not have a previous introductory class.
The course wants to accompany students to approach in a critical and innovative way some basic notions of traditional grammar, according to a cognitive and comparative approach. On the one hand, we will explore the cognitive bases of traditional notions in grammatical analysis, by investigating the nature of the differences among word classes (noun, verb, adjective..) and grammatical functions (subject, goal…); this way, we will critically examine the notions of 'rule' and 'error' in the domain of grammar. On the other hand, we will investigate the structures of the Italian language in a cross-linguistic perspective, following the methods of typological linguistics, seeking the determinants and limits of linguistic diversity.

Assessment methods
The assessment will take place during an oral examination. The student will be asked to start with a topic of her / his choice and to proceed, in a dialogue with the instructor, to touch upon various themes in the program, in an autonomous and critical way.
A positive evaluation will be possible in the presence of proper language, correct use of the technical terminology typical of the discipline, precision in the discussion of the various topics and in the argumentation, critical ability to evaluate theories and analyses presented in class / in the texts, originality in establishing connections among the various thematic areas.
Repeating mechanicallly and mnemonically the contents of the course, logical fallacies in the argumentation, insufficiently mastering the technical terminology will have a negative effect on the evaluation.
It is mandatory to sign up for the exam in Almaesami. If many students sign up, the instructor will communicate a time plan for the oral exams as soon as the lists close.
