Course contents

DIAGNOSTICS AND TESTING OF STRUCTURES
Part 2

Measurements and instrumentation
Elements of Metrology: measurements, calibration curves, resolution, repeatability, accuracy, sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis.
Traditional and innovative instrumentation  for measures of distance, displacement, tilt, strain, crack opening, vibration, force, stress and temperature.
Special measurement techniques: fiber optic sensors, non-contact sensors, MEMS, laser vibrometry, photoelasticity, DIC.
Experimental methods for the evaluation of stress states
Calculation of the stresses from measured strains. Methods of tension release. Identification of the stress in metal ties.
Non-destructive testing and coring of concrete
Moderately destructive and non-destructive testing of concrete structures. Magnetometry for the identification of reinforcing bars. Coring. Non-destructive methods (rebound hammer, ultrasound, other methods).
Survey procedures, processing of the experimental data for estimating the concrete compressive strength and for the analysis of the defects, standards.
Microseismic surveys
Wave propagation in solids. Microseismic surveys in the sonic and ultrasonic fields, diagnostics of structural elements in concrete, natural stone and marble: physical basis, instrumentation, operating procedures, processing and analysis of the results.
Testing of existing masonry structures
Moderately destructive and non-destructive testing of masonry structures. Flat jacks, shear tests of bed joints, penetration tests, testing of small samples.
Advanced techniques for the diagnosis of civil structures and cultural heritage
Radar: physical basis, instrumentation, operational procedures and applications. Thermography: an outline.
Structural Monitoring
Variables to be monitored. Factors affecting monitoring. Monitoring levels. Networks. Monitoring of crack patterns. Analysis of data.
