Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has a good knowledge of Dante's works, especially of the Comedy, with particular attention to the philological and textual aspects and to the critical tradition.

The student will study the prescribed cantos in one of the following recommended commented editions: A.M. Chiavacci Leonardi (Bologna, Zanichelli); E. Pasquini-A.E. Quaglio (Milano, Garzanti); U. Bosco- G. Reggio (Firenze, Le Monnier); N. Sapegno (Firenze, La Nuova Italia); R. Merlante-S. Prandi (Brescia, La Scuola); G. Inglese (Roma, Carocci, only the Inferno and the Purgatorio); S. Bellomo (Torino, Einaudi: only the Inferno)

A complete reading and a general knowledge of the Comedy is required.

Students will also read, in Italian or English translation the following texts:

Ovid, Metamorphosis, 4 books to one's choice

 

Statius, Thebais, 3 books to one's choice among: I, VII, VIII, XI e XII

 

Lucan, Pharsalia, books I and IX.

 

Foreign students will read only 3 books of the Aneis and 3 books of the Metamorphosis.

 

Photocopies of some biblical, ancient and medieval texts will be fournished.They will form part of the examination program.

Assessment methods

The final examination will be an oral conversation. In the course of this conversation will be verified the achievement of the knwoledge and abilities required, and particularly:

- the generale knowledge of Dante's works and especially the Comedy in its main structural aspects;

- the precise knowledge of the Comedy's Cantos specifically indicated in the program; for these cantos will be required the ability to give a paraphrase and an analytical comment, also in reference to the tradition of Dante Studies;

- the comprehension of the main information and arguments in the critical essays chosen by the student from those indicated in the program; the ability to present in clear and good italian those contents; the ability to apply critically the essays to the reading of the Dante's texts in program;

- the ability to connect the Dante's texts read by the student with relevant and pertinent aspects of the ancient and medieval culture examined during the course and in the critical essays chosen by the student.
