Course Title: Lire les media dans l'actualité: une perspective francophone 

 

 

By the end of the course the student should have acquired the analytical tools necessary to identify the difference between an apparent world without borders which allows the free movement of goods, images and messages across the media, and the reality, which is a world represented by and functioning through its diversity and division. The course aims to reflect on the role of the media in the development of the world's current democratic societies. Being aware of the level of media exposure to which individuals are subjected leads to the realisation that language, through its discursive mechanisms, can construct "events". In addition, the role of the writer/mediator in journalism will be investigated with the aim of highlighting how mediation is crucial to building collective and discursive memories within contemporary society, as well as conveying the representation of the Other. Additionally, the student will refine their skills in the textual and discursive analysis of implicit ideological and cultural discourses. The course materials will consist of analysis of the website "Parcs Canada" in terms of tourism, and French-language online newspaper articles (from Belgium, France, Switzerland, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Quebec, Senegal, Mali and the West Indies).

The course aims to develop the mastery of oral and written language through the study of the French media. The course will be based on the analysis and interpretation of social and cultural representations conveyed by the language of the media and focusing on the linguistic, stylistic and cultural tools used in journalistic and editorial writing through the analysis of a set of resources.

This course falls within the specific context of the Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners course and relates to language teaching, encouraging initiative and direct student participation and developing knowledge and language skills through a series of interactive exercises (planning and development of educational activities).

Program of the Module for language support classes for Relazioni Internazionali

By the end of the course, the student should have a good active and passive knowledge of French. In particular, the student should be able to: follow a lesson in French, actively participating; understand and comment on journalistic and academic texts; understand the specialist jargon of politics and the media in French-speaking cultures and be able to discuss it within an academic context and; prepare and orally present a short research project on a topic which has been studied in the course.

Teaching methods

The methodology applied is the analysis of the language with particular attention to the lexicon. The lexical analysis is in fact aimed at the study of the representation of the Other in contemporary French language media. The lessons are lecture style.

Assessment methods

Assessment of the teaching module

This module is available to students of the following Laurea Magistrale: Language, society and communication; Language and Italian culture for foreigners; and International Relations.

The exam consists of an oral interview in French which can only be taken after passing a language test. The oral test will evaluate the critical and methodological skills of the student, who will discuss texts covered during the course (10 points). The student must demonstrate a clear understanding of and ability to discuss the program by being able to navigate between the various course topics (10 points). The student must also demonstrate a command of the French language in terms of oral production (10 points).

Students may choose between two programs:

Assessment of the module "Language support classes"

This module applies to the students of the Laurea Magistrale in Language, society and communication (Dr. Cassone)

By the end of the course the student should be able to develop the conceptual structure of various types of articles and then reproduce the text in language which is clear, precise and effective in its line of argument. The written test will consist of writing an article which must meet two fundamental parameters of equal value: 1. The conceptual structure of the article produced and; 2. The command of the language (appropriate wording, precise vocabulary, style appropriate to the type of the article, the correct syntax of the sentence and the text, effective argument and correct punctuation).

This module is for students of the Laurea Magistrale in Language, culture and Italian for foreigners (Dr. Cohen).

The test will consist of different types of exercises for a more complete assessment of the various skills acquired. 1. A textual analysis from a written document. 2. A written text answering a specific question in relation to a given text, advertisement or photo (for example, dialogue building, story completion, or a description.)  3. Creation of specific teaching materials (development of grammar exercises, questionnaires, etc.) First exercise: Textual Analysis (+/-50% of the marks of the test, half for language and half for the quality of the analysis). Evaluation criteria: ability to correctly answer questions, not to paraphrase the text, to make relevant comments from the analysis of the formal text (lexical fields, figures of speech, rhythm of the sentence, time used etc..), good command of and correctness of the language. Second exercise: Written text (+/- 25% of the mark). Third exercise: Teaching material (+/- 25% of the mark). Evaluation criteria: strict compliance with the instructions given. Linguistic correctness, clarity of the exercise proposed for the student.

 

This module applies to students of the Laurea Magistrale in International Relations

The test consists of the choice of either a written grammar test or an oral test on an article from the French language media chosen by the student. Evaluation criteria: correctness in language and expression, capacity to exhibit critical thinking and analysis.
