Course contents

The first forty hours will be focused on the analysis of the main concepts of modern political thought in their different articulations: authority, natural law, political subject, power, contract, State, sovereignty, representation, public sphere, rights, civil society, constitution, democracy, dialectic.

The remaining twenty hours will be focused on the history of women and feminist political thought, moving from the main texts of the so called «first wave feminism» to the recent post-feminist debates and post-colonial feminism. Particularly, students will be provided with the conceptual basis and the historical references necessary to understand and contextualize the political reflection of women and their critiques of the main topics developed by contemporary political thought.

1) Manuale di storia del pensiero politico , a c. di C. Galli, Bologna, Il Mulino, 20113 (from chapter 3, to chapter 15 included; from chapter 3, to chapter 13 included  for the students who will attend the classes for 6 CFU).

2) I grandi testi del pensiero politico.  Antologia , a c. di C. Galli, Bologna, Il Mulino, 20112 (ten authors choosen by the student. Those students who will attend the classes for 6 CFU must choose only 6 authors)

3) Le filosofie femministe: due secoli di battaglie teoriche e pratiche, a cura di Adriana Cavarero e Franco Restaino, Milano, Bruno Mondadori, 2009.

Teaching methods


The course consists in frontal lessons and it is articulated into two sections. The first one aims at furnishing the conceptual instruments and the proper lexicon of the history of modern political thought, while the second one introduces students to a direct understanding of a classical text in history of political thought, and of a system of radical critique of modernity. 

Assessment methods

FOR THE STUDENTS WHO WILL ATTEND THE CLASSES

Oral examination focused on the contents of the course and the texts, that will take place in the dates established by professor Galli during the year.

 

FOR THE STUDENTS WHO WILL NOT ATTEND THE CLASSES

Oral examination in order to ascertain the qualification of the students about the program assigned by Professor Galli
