Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to perform an ocular motility examination in patients with cerebral lesions involving supranuclear pathways. Students should be able to recognize the main forms of conjugate gaze palsies, internuclear ophthalmoplegia, saccadic and smooth-pursuit disorders.

Course contents

Physiology and anatomy of supranuclear gaze control systems - Gaze paralisies, internuclear ophthalmoplegia, neurologic nystagmus, vergences' disorders - Ocular motility disorders of cerebellar origin.

The course includes frontal lectures and attendanceto the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service of the Department of Ophthalmology.
Frontal lectures of Prof. Schiavi will be held on March 11, 2013, from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., in the "Corrado hall", pavilion 1, St. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, via P. Palagi, 9, Bologna. Calendar of attendanceto the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service will be communicated to each student at the end of the frontal lectures.

Teaching methods

Videoprojection of slides and movies. At the end of the frontal lectures, students will attend the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service of the Department of Ophthalmology.
