Learning outcomes

At the end of this course the student refines knowledge about history of modern and contemporaryphilosophy, with particular attention to themes and philosophical questions in a the long term perspective. The student also sharpens the ability to identify the main lines of interpretation and historiography.

Course contents

The social contract between model and contemporary age.

The course will focus on the history and analysis of some key authors of modern and contemporary contractarian theory. After an introduction dedicated to the out-line of the theoretical model of the social contract and the alternative model proposed by the emerging classical political economy (Mandeville, Smith), the first module will address the theories of Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau. The second module will then consider the Kantian contractarianism, the criticism of Hegel to this model of sovereignty and legitimacy, finally, two examples of twentieth-century recovery of the device of the "state of nature" and the "social contract" (Nozick, and Rawls).

Assessment methods

The oral exam will be focused on three parts:
1. The history of philosophy (from 17th to 19th  Century) on the base of a good handbook, with specific attentions to these authors: Galilei, Bacone, Descartes, Pascal, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz, Vico, Newton, Berkeley, Hume, Voltaire, Diderot, D'Alembert, Montesquieu, Condillac, Rousseau, Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Marx, Comte, Bentham, J.S. Mill, Nietzsche;
2. the texts analyzed during the course;
3. A. Burgio, Per un lessico critico del contrattualismo moderno, La scuola di Pitagora, 2006;
4. Two books chosen in different groups listed in the section "TEXT/BIBLIOGRAPHY" of this programme .

Teaching tools
