1 STATICS AND KYNEMATICS OF RIGID SYSTEMS
Rigid body. Rigid systems. Constraints. Static and kinematic analysis. Statically determined structures. Graphical and analytical solution methods. Principle of Virtual Works for rigid systems. Beam model and internal forces. Truss structures. Gerber beams.
2 CROSS SECTION GEOMETRY PROPERTIESCentroid. First and second order moments. Axis rotations. Mohr's graphical method.
3 ELEMENTS OF SOLIDS MECHANICSVolume and surface forces. Rigid body equilibrium. Concept of stress and stress tensor. Principal stresses and directions. Mohr's circles. Equilibrium equations. Displacement, deformation and strain. Strain tensor and physical meaning. Principal strains and directions. Compatibility equations. Elastic behavior and strain energy. Linear elasticity. Isotropy. Hooke's laws. The linear elastic equilibrium problem. Energy theorems.
4 MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODSBehavior of materials. Testing of ductile and brittle materials. Mechanical properties and characterisation of steel, concrete, masonry and wood. Destructive and non-destructive tests.
5 STRUCTURAL SYMMETRY AND ASYMMETRYProperties of diagrams of internal forces and dosplacements.
