Learning outcomes
Level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The student will be skilled in theory of translation and able to translate different types of texts from French into Italian.
Course contents
The awareness of translating
After an introduction to the history of translation, a framework will be provided to the main topics in science of translating. Then, a practical work will be started on different textual typologies.
In particular, we shall deal with the specialized text, the essay, the novel and poetry.
We will look in detail into:
- collocations
- when a translation gets old: the need for a revision
- translating between linguo-cultural systems
- the ethics of the translator
- the translator and the lexicographical resources.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lessons will go together with practical work on different typologies of published and unpublished texts and discussions on possible translating strategies. Since the course will be seminar-like, attendance is warmly recommended
Assessment methods
For students who have attended the course
The exam will consist on a written essay and an oral test.
The essay shall not be longer than 3 pages (of 2000 characters, spaces included).
1) During the course, an mid-term test is meant to take place, for attending students only. It will consist on an oral exposition on history and theory of translation, to be decided with the teacher.
For students who are successful with the mid-term test, the oral exam will consist on a discussion on translation choices from texts studied during the course or similar.
2) The students who decide not to do the mid-term test should write an essay on history and theory of translation, to be decided with the teacher. The essay will be sent by e-mail to the teacher at least ten days before the oral exam. The oral exam shall consist on a discussion on theoretical of history and theory of translation and on translation choices from texts studied during the course or similar. Furthermore, a discussion will be made on the written essay.
For students who haven't attended the course
The students who HAVEN'T ATTENDED THE COURSE should write an essay on history and theory of translation, to be decided with the teacher. The essay will be sent by e-mail to the teacher at least ten days before the oral exam. The oral exam shall consist on a discussion on theoretical of history and theory of translation and on translation choices from texts studied during the course or similar. Furthermore, a discussion will be made on the written essay.
