Learning outcomes

The course means to treat the first principles of the iconographical and iconological approach to images. The object of the course is giving students the basical instruments to interpret the relation between the formal aspect and the meaning of art works, and also to determine the role of art works within the history of culture.

Course contents

A brief introduction into the matter, with particular attention to the role of Aby Warburg and of some scholars particularly interested in his heritage.

The political use of images in the old regime society. Celebrations and feasts; the construction of the image of the prince.

Teaching methods

Lectures, use of Power Point presentations, guided visits, in particular to Florence, to the exhibition “Maiestate tantum” devoted to the Granduke Ferdinando I de' Medici, and to other places involved with the Medicean power.

Assessment methods

Students should pass an oral exam. The exam focuses on the understanding of key concepts, the critical approach to the texts and the comprehension of questions put to students.

Teaching tools

The lessons will be supported with a wide selection of pictures, shown with powerpoints.
