Course contents

First of all, the course contents will be focused on:
- the modern concept of work
- work and industrial society
- labour market categories
- work and occupational systems today
- the division of labour through gender and age. Current migrations and work

In the meantime the course will deepen issues connected to the organization of work in the industrial and postindustrial society. More in particular:
- taylorism and fordism
- the 'human relation' movement
- the tavistock institute and workgroups
- lean production and total quality management
- network corporations and the new forms of production
- the work process in the postindustrial economy and the new occupational structure

Finally the course will focus on issues connected to the flexibility of work and the growing employment instability, examining the dilemma: precarization or self-fulfilment?

Teaching methods

The course is organized in different parts: lectures will be alternated with group discussions.

Assessment methods

In the middle of the course a written test, at the end of the course another written test. Otherwise an oral examination on the whole program.
