Learning outcomes

Economics of culture investigates the relations between the creativity dimension and its economic implication. The course aims to understand the organizational logic, the managerial and financial issues, the productive distributive and consumption process in cultural services and products.

Course contents

The course tackles economic and management issues in the cultural markets and organizations, focusing on complex relations between arts and economy.

 

PART I – Economy and cultural markets

-          Culture and economy: the dimensions of capital

-          Cultural production: creative industries and markets

-          Cultural consumption

-          Heritage preservation and presentation. Material cultural products

-          Cultural events and performing arts

-          Cultural industries in-depth

PART II – the cultural management: actors and actions

-          Organization and management of cultural industries

-          Evaluation and impact of cultural markets

-          Stakeholders in the cultural sector. Public and private expense in culture

-          Fiscality, fundraising and copyrights

PART III – Culture and local development

-          Cultural planning, network and externalities

-          Culture and territory: cultural districts and cities

-          Cultural policy: partnership and private investment

-          Cultural economy international

At the beginning of the course a selection of papers will be provided

Assessment methods

The course will provide both frontal lessons and presentation and discussion of cases

Students will have to write a short essay on agreed subjects.

Slides will be provided to students during the course.
