Learning outcomes

The course aim is to provide students with a detailed knowledge of the main instruments for the study of Greek History and with a general knowledge of the main periods and themes of Greek History.
The course will start from examples on how to handle the reading list and will then analyse in depth some relevant themes and problems through the critical reading of sources and documents.

Course contents

1 Introduction to Greek History. The instruments. The history of the discipline. Bibliography.
2 Individual study of Greek History from the origins to the end of indipendence.
3 Themes and problems in Greek History: examples and reading of original sources.

For students taking only the first 5 credits:

1. Introduction to Greek History. The instruments. The history of the discipline. Bibliography.
2. Individual study of Greek History from the origins to the end of indipendence.

Attention: students who cannot follow the course or who have special interests shoud agree about a different content and reading list directly with the lecturer before the end of the course.

Teaching methods

The course will consist in lectures in which several case studies will be presented and contextualized.
Students will be asked to partecipate to specific activities in class and in the library in order to acquire abilities in the use of sources and in the use of research and knowledge updating tools.

Assessment methods

The student through an oral exam will demonstrate knowledge of the main events within a critical framework of the Greek World history's themes and problems. Students will  show capacity of a critical use of sources, tools for information gathering, knowledge updating and research.
