Course contents

Introduction and overview: Electronic structure and chemical bonds. Lewis structures. Resonance structures. Atomic orbitals. The Aufbau principle. molecular orbitals. Hybrid orbitals.  Structures of organic molecules. Acids and bases. Functional groups.

Alkanes: nomenclature, physical properties, reactivity, conformational isomers, potential-energy diagrams.

Stereoisomerism: chiral molecules, optical activity, absolute configuration, Fischer projections, diastereomers, stereochemistry in chemical reactions, separation of enantiomers.

Cyclic Alkanes: nomenclature, physical properties, ring strain and structure, polycyclic alkanes.

Haloalkanes: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Organometallic reagents: alkyllithium and alkylmagnesium.

Nucleophilic substitutions and eliminations: introduction, kinetic, stereochemistry, competition between elimination and substitution.

Alkenes: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Alkynes: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Alcohols: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Ethers: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Aromatic compunds:  nomenclature, aromaticity, resonance, electrophilic aromatic substitution, reactions of substituted benzenes, substituents control, regioselectivity.

Arenes: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Electron delocalisation and resonance: benzylic radical and carbocation, dienes.

Phenols: nomenclature, physical properties, acidity, preparation, reactivity.

Aldehydes and ketones: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, reactivity.

Carboxylic acids: nomenclature, physical properties, acidity, preparation, reactivity.
