The aim of the National Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing is to extract social and economic value from the ever-increasing amount of data produced by scientific, industrial and institutional actors.
The perspective is that of a state-of-the-art infrastructure for high performance computing and big data management, capable of bringing together existing resources.

Preparations are underway to get the project up and running
The research and development activities focus on high performance computing, simulation, computation and data analytics.
The main activities currently being carried out include:
- implementing technological solutions to increase network speeds up to 1 Terabit per second
- providing a cloud platform to manage big data research and development activities
- guidelines have been drawn up for the development of responsible data management policies
In the coming months
CINECA's Leonardo supercomputer will be upgraded
- the purchase of a quantum computer for the Technopole and the extension of the GARR-T network will be arranged, which will further enhance the national network capabilities for education and research
- new thematic centres will be created in different locations in Italy
- the development of a centralised container for storing large amounts of data in its native format, at a national level, which can guarantee easy and transparent access to resources.
In the short term, the goal is to launch an enhanced cloud infrastructure by 2024, further consolidating Italy's position as a leader in technological innovation and scientific research.
