NRRP Projects – Innovative PhD programmes in cooperation with businesses
The University of Bologna’s contribution to NRRP investment “Introduction of innovative PhD programmes responding to the innovation needs of companies and promotion of recruiting researchers at businesses” (M4C2 – Investment 3.3).
The action aims to strengthen high-profile skills, especially in the area of Key Enabling Technologies, by setting up dedicated PhD programmes with the support and involvement of businesses, and to incentivise firms to hire junior researchers. All this in order to reinforce our economic system by adopting a knowledge-based development model and boosting cooperation between public research and the business world.
The measure will lead to create 5,000 3-year PhD scholarships, also funded through private investment, and incentivise the hiring of 20,000 research fellows or researchers at private businesses.

The notice was published on 9 April 2022 by Ministerial Decree 352/2022.
The results of the scholarship awarding process were published on 28 December 2022 by Director’s Decree 2153/2022.
Each PhD scholarship is co-funded through the NRRP for €30,000.

The University of Bologna’s contribution
38th PhD cycle
The University of Bologna was granted 202 scholarships for PhD programmes in cooperation with businesses starting in the 2022/23 academic year.
The University of Bologna has awarded 172 scholarships, i.e. over 85% of those granted (against a national average of just above 32%), which makes us the first Italian university in terms of ability to create innovative PhD programmes in cooperation with businesses.
39th PhD cycle
The MUR granted 112 scholarships to the University of Bologna for PhD programmes in cooperation with businesses starting in the 2023/24 academic year.
The call for applications for PhD programmes of the 39th cycle (2023/24 academic year) will be published by the University in May 2023.
