Italy's largest public Research and Development programme in the telecommunications sector
The project focuses on the major topics of telecommunications science and technology, including all types of systems and networks, for both human and non-human users. The main focus is on high-capacity fixed networks, 5G/6G cellular networks, local area networks and satellite networks for applications in sectors such as agriculture, commerce, energy, finance, industry, media, health, security and transport.
RESTART is an ambitious programme that aims to revolutionise the telecommunications sector in Italy by achieving the following goals:
- implement specific research projects with concrete and measurable results, overcoming the current fragmentation of research and development through coordination and synergy actions
- provide suitable tools and long-term support measures to encourage technological innovation and entrepreneurial success in the sector
- reduce North-South disparities, with specific initiatives targeting industrial areas in the South
- contribute to the digital transformation of industries and public administrations, creating the conditions for the emergence of new companies and the growth of existing ones

Activities of university research teams
Researchers at the University of Bologna are focusing on the development of new technologies to support 5G and 6G systems, including those related to satellite communications (non-terrestrial networks), communications between vehicles and drones, the Internet of Things and industrial communication networks. These areas will enable the transformation of telecommunications across various sectors, from agriculture to healthcare, industry to institutional applications, leading to a more efficient and sustainable world.
Telecommunications for students and investors
RESTART aims to stimulate interest among students and investors by facilitating the design and use of telecommunications applications and services. The University's commitment to this programme underlines its desire to contribute to a more connected and innovative Italy, promoting an inclusive approach that enhances the resources and talents distributed throughout the country.
